{"id":2531,"date":"2017-02-20T22:43:24","date_gmt":"2017-02-20T22:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/?p=2531"},"modified":"2017-03-24T00:56:53","modified_gmt":"2017-03-24T00:56:53","slug":"kaikoura-earthquake-shaken-but-not-stirred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/?p=2531","title":{"rendered":"Kaikoura Earthquake &#8211; Shaken but not Stirred!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Kaikoura Earthquake<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just after midnight on November 14th, 2017 the Kaikoura area suffered a severe 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake\u00a0started\u00a0about 60 kilometres south-west of Kaikoura near the town of Culverden and spread from fault to fault along a 150 km length of the northeast coast of the South Island.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Extensive damage was done to buildings, roads, rail lines and infrastructure across the region particularly to the north of Kaikoura. I&#8217;m sure privately many people are still coming to terms with these dramatic changes and wondering what the future holds.\u00a0So I was delighted to see people in good spirits, businesses open and the beloved wildlife still there all safe and well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are still great challenges to overcome but I have been very impressed with the spirit, support and care they are taking to support and encourage one another through these difficult times. The least we can do is continue to support them all in any way we can and if we&#8217;re able to go and visit them to help keep this wonderful place kicking along.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kaikoura\u00a0&#8211; Planning a Visit<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So here is a brief rundown of what you need to know if you&#8217;d like to support the local Kaikoura community with a visit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Getting There &#8211; Road, Rail, Air and Sea Access<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_2539\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/?attachment_id=2539\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2539\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2539\" class=\"wp-image-2539 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/B-1166.jpg\" alt=\"B-1166\" width=\"800\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/B-1166.jpg 800w, https:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/B-1166-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/B-1166-768x400.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whalespotter.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/B-1166-601x313.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">State Highway 1 is Open from the South <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>State Highway 1<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>South<\/strong> &#8211; The main road State Highway 1<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is now open from the south. Major roadworks are underway so expect some delays and detours. Best to relax, take your time and enjoy the adventure of this journey. Access north is via the inland road and Lewis Pass. Repairs and dredging are currently underway to make the docks accessible around the clock again as soon as possible. So you will not go hungry, thirsty or without a bed.\u00a0Some buildings that have had major\u00a0damage will take some time to be repaired. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is best to contact any service providers for their latest up-to-date information on what is available. Image by Paul Boocock<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Two favourites of mine are the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueseasmotel.co.nz\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Blue Seas Motel<\/strong><\/a> on the water front at\u00a0Kaikoura and for something special <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/hapukufactory.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Factory<\/strong><\/a> a few minutes&#8217; drive up the coast at\u00a0Hapuku Settlement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fine Dinning\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Well\u00a0Kaikoura does mean &#8216;Eat\u00a0Crayfish&#8217; so I guess when in Rome&#8230; There are lots of restaurants, cafe and food van options in\u00a0Kaikoura. The whales, dolphins, seals and birds are all still there. Luckily it all happened just before the pups were due to be born. At this point the area is still too dangerous to enter and there are only basic reports as to the condition of the area. It is believed that the waterfall may have survived but that the creek did not. It is also thought that the seals just moved a few hundred metres away and set up camp again there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Hutton&#8217;s Shearwater<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I was devastated to learn that the endangered\u00a0Hutton&#8217;s Shearwater may have lost up to a quarter of their population due to landslides in their breeding grounds. Hopefully they will be able to recover.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/nz-earthquake\/86547893\/At-risk-bird-Huttons-Shearwater-has-lost-an-estimated-quarter-of-their-population\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Stuff Report<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dolphin Encounter<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Dolphin Encounter is running both dolphin watching and swims as well as\u00a0Albatross watching tours. They are not as badly affected by the sea floor rise in the South Bay Marina and are able to operate at most times. Trips are in demand so pre-booking is essential.
